well your the one that should be controlling how much he eats.. my cat is/was fat as well and i just watch how much dry food he has, feed him once a day.at first he would eat all of it in one sitting. now he eats a little and then comes back and he has started to lose some weight. but No matter how much be begs dont give him more food he will learn to make it stretch. dont starve him just watch the portions.

cat training information
I used to have a cat and she got up to 18 pounds….very heavy for a cat. My vets advise at the time was to get her on the diet cat food and put it down twice a day for 15 minutes each time. At first she didn’t eat when I had put it down and was starving by the time I put it down that evening. By the next morning she got the hang of it. Within a few months she was back down to 12 pounds, a much more acceptable weight.

Stop feeding it so much. I’ve heard tell to give it 1/3 cup 3 times a day.
I leave food down all day for my cats, but they aren’t gorgers, but some cats are. You don’t want your cat to suffer from heart disease etc.
If it is an older cat get food for seniors, higher in nutrition and lower in calories.
If all else fails, find a good gym! (sorry couldn’t resist!)

Switch to a high quality (Felidae, Innova, Wellness) wet food if you aren’t feeding wet (it’s healthier overall, plus better for weight loss since it has less carbohydrates) and feed twice a day as per the instructions on the food (do not freefeed).

Put the food bowl down for 15 minutes two or three times a day. The cat can get all the food it needs during that time. Take the bowl up when the 15 minutes are done and put it where the cat can’t get it.
