The 3 “whatnot” muppets look like unformed proto-people to me (think Invasion of the Body Snatchers or Stepford Wives), with no hair and no eyes behind their glasses. Had they fitted out those 3 with hair, clothes, etc., they would not be as scary. But as someone else noted, this edginess is what made early SS so cool: the full-featured Bip is the hapless non-conformist trying to be heard, and the faceless hipster goons are trying to quash him.

I’m just surprised because Joan Ganz Kuhne was the overseer of Sesame Street, a very educated and classy person, and now they have these labels. I realize some of what was said wasn’t “politically correct” that was Henson. An adult would laugh at something while the child is laughing at the same clip but something different that they see. You know what I mean? Anyway, there was a big article out on how old sesame st. could be harmful to children’s psyche. Everyone was shocked.

I think because some of the humor that was used during the 1970s and 1980s was geered towards adults like Don Music’s low self-esteam and “I want a Monster to be my friend” plus subjects like teaching kids how to use the bus and subway was too advanced for the original target audiences and I think Sesame Workshop probably put those warnings on because it was a different time peroid and lots of things have changed in which is considered innocent humor and such. Maybe, I’m not 100% sure.

I remember this like it was yesterday, watching it as a toddler.
1:41 – “But he bled instead!!!”
Sesame Street really was warped in hindsight, and changed do many lives.

Huh? I just got an email about this. I think it’s sad that Retro Sesame DVDs have warnings on them that they are not necessarily for children. Personally I grew up on this stuff and I love it. The original Sesame street taught me quite a bit when I was 3 and 4.

I’ll tell you what’s up with that: Sesame Street: Old School was done not 100% for kids in mind, but a lot for the adults who grew up with it and just feel Elmo-ed to death.
I don’t take it as a warning, they’re just catering for the nostalgic set is all IMO.

I keep re-watching. This is the sheeeet! xD

I remember this quite well. I even saw this in the 1990s. How old is this segment?
May 10th, 2009 at 7:35 am
The Green Muppet on this sketch (and song) sort of reminds me of Kermit. Even though this one doesn’t have eyes like him. What do you think?
