Do fat cats have a shorter lifespan than normal-weight cats?

I was wondering about this because our house cat is 8 years old right now and he’s rather big (about 18 pounds). Is it a known fact that large cats don’t live longer than a regular-sized house cat?
Thanks in advance.

a cat has to be healthy to live a long time so your cat does need to loose some wieght

YES! It is a strain on their heart to pump the blood to their muscles to be able to carry their excessive weight. It is scientifically proven to shorten their lifespan by five-eight years.

my 9 year old cat weighs 16 pounds. when i took him to my vet he told me i didn’t want him to lose any weight, it would not be good for him(!). he also told me he had a good ten years left.

They do because they are susceptible to more health problems, just like people are. Diabetes and liver disease are two diseases that cats are prone to get when they are overweight. They also get arthritis from carrying around all that extra weight.

    they can, just like humans.

“Fat” cats live shorter than healthy cats because they are prone to health problems. Diabetes and liver problems are just some of the few things that could result out of having a fat cat. However, if he is a very long cat, this could be the correct weight. Talk to your vet, they’ll give you a personalized solution.
