exercise (just like a human) is the best way to loose weight…play with you cats and get them worn out…they will start to lose the weight. over weight is a common thing especially for indoor cats.
also – take them to the vet for a check up –just to make sure they don’t have anything else wrong that would hinder them from losing weight.
good luck

Try Hill’s Prescription Diet W/D. I have a fat cat and an average sized cat and they are both able to eat it. The only downfall is you that can only get it at a vets office.

My daughter in law has a cat that is just a couch potato. She seems healthy and is a lovely cat. Doesn’t want to go outside, just lays around all day. She is the same age as her brother and hasn’t been sick.
I know it’s difficult to feed cats separately, but if you feed them twice a day in different places, they will be hungry enough to eat it right away, and then you can monitor the amount. Good luck!

This is the diet I was given by the vet for my overweight cat- 1 cup of cooked white rice mixed with 3 tablespoons of lean chopped meat cooked in a small amount of water-not grease-lean hamburger drained of oils is fine- and a half a can of rinsed green beans- divide into 2 servings and feed twice a day until your cat reaches its desired weight. It worked and my cat seemed to enjoy it.

well since one of your cats is in good health do not change his/her food because it can make him/her sick and possibly even depressed (yes, strangly cats do become depressed over simple things such as change of food). but what i would try is elevating the healthy cats food by putting it somewhere like ontop of the fridge (just make sure wherever you put it is agreeable with your cat, and he/she will let you know, believe me). and as for fatty mcgee, i would provide dry food that contains less than 10 percent fat and more than 15 percent fiber, purchase food that has both Association of American Feeding Control Officials (AAFCO) and Animal Feeding Trials (or Animal Feeding Tests) on its label, Provide weight-reducing food to your cat at every meal. Feed the allotted amount four times daily, or at least twice daily, and play with your pet several times a day; this will help a lazy cat, in particular, get needed exercise. but be careful, forcing an extreme diet on an obese cat can cause severe hepatic lipidoses (fatty liver deposits). The greater the obesity, the greater the risk. Use extreme caution and consult a veterinarian before placing an obese cat on a diet.

You’ll have one hell of a time trying to get a cat to lose weight eating ANY kind of dry food. About the only way you can do that is by restricting their intake which is going to make both of you unhappy. And in a multi-cat household, you’re going to need to play prison warden to ensure no cheating occurs.
After putting all that effort into it, you’re better off cutting out your weekly mani-pedi (or whatever) and putting the money into better food which is what will do the trick.
Check out these links on how to get cats to safely and effectively lose weight – while improving overall health.
It may be true that a good canned food will cost more than conveniently packaged and full-of-crappy-filler dry food, but more than just your cat’s weight will improve!

Well to be honest it is very hard for kitties to lose weight. I have a kitty and she is around 10 or 11 (not sure for certain found her) She has been eating Hill’s Science Diet for years. you need to get the fat kitty some diet food of some sort if you can’t get Hills and you need to feed them separately. You should not keep a bowl of food out all the time for them to nibble all the time because the big one is getting his/her fill and that is contributing to the gain. It is very hard to do this but you need to do this for health reasons. It is just as bad on an animal to be overweight as it is on a human. Also read the instructions for feeding and don’t overfeed because it is hard not to. I know but I love my “Honey” she is my first baby and don’t want her to die anytime soon.
Also take to the vet to make sure everything is okay and then they can also suggest other things to help. Most kitties are lazy and you can’t help them to lose weight by making them play with you. I talked to my vet about this and they said they are not like humans in that respect and you can’t make them lose weight by walking, running, etc…
Wish you and kitty luck because it is a hard road to travel down because I have been going down it for many years now.

You should take notice of how much each cat eats. My two cats are almost like that except the other cat’s not really plump (just heavy).
Plus, your cat’s still that fuzzy creature, right? So it’s okay.

feed them both lite or diet food. It won’t hurt your skinny cat and it will help your fat cat lose weight. Also, you could try to feed them on a schedule (like dogs) so they don’t have access to the bowl all day long.
Do they have toys that they play with? The good ones for exercise are the ones that they can chase. My boys especially like the little tinsel balls- I have to buy them 25 at a time b/c they disappear. But they love them. Exercise=weight loss for cats, just like humans.

I have two cats as well. One it very large and one is normal. They eat from the same bowl. The normal one actually meows for food more. I would not use diet food because then the normal one would become to thin. If you have indoor- outdoor cats I would just send the larger cat outside more to hunt or do other cat things. If you only have indoor cats try amusing him or her with string, bouncy balls, catnip, etc. Catnip plants, and catnip stuffed animals work very nicely.

There may not be a fancy, brand-name diet program for fat cats yet, but there are other ways to help your cat drop those extra pounds. Follow these ten steps from Dr. Dan Carey, a veterinarian and director of technical communications at The Iams Company, to help your cat reach a healthier weight. First, always check with your veterinarian to establish goals and make sure your cat is otherwise healthy. Then, continue follow-up visits with your veterinarian to monitor progress.
Let the games begin! Help your cat burn calories by encouraging her to play. Toss her toys for her to chase, wiggle a wand for her to jump up high, or provide a taller cat scratching post for her to climb.
Go for a walk. Show those dogs a thing or two, and take your cat for a walk-even if it’s just inside the house. Many cats learn to enjoy walking on a leash, especially if trained while still young. It’s a great excuse for you to get more exercise, too.
Ease into shape. Watch how your fat cat handles increased activity. Don’t let your cat become exhausted, overheated or out of breath. Also remember that older cats may not be able to exercise vigorously.
Replace treats with praise. When your cat is begging for treats, it could be that she’s just begging for your attention. Substitute play, grooming, stroking or conversation for food treats as expressions of love. You can also try catnip as a non-food treat.
Resist those pleas. Is your cat an expert at begging for table scraps? If you find it difficult to ignore those “sad eyes” (or wailing!) at mealtime, keep your feline in a separate room.
Feed cats individually. If you have more than one cat, consider keeping them in separate rooms during their mealtime. This will prevent the greediest cat from overeating, and ensure that slower cats get fed.
Play fetch. Toss dry food kibbles to your cat, one piece at time, to combine exercise with mealtime.
Avoid fiber overload. Many reduced calorie pet foods include increased levels of fiber that can interfere with a pet’s ability to absorb and digest nutrients. Food with the proper balance of animal-based protein, fat, carbohydrates and moderately fermentable fiber sources, such as beet pulp, is a healthier choice. Try new Eukanuba® Weight control Formula for Cats-which also has a unique Feline Fat Burner systemª, which promotes health and well-being while helping cats to burn fat and lose or maintain weight successfully.
Smaller meals, more often. As with people, several smaller meals each day vs. one large serving help cats burn more calories. This is through meal-induced thermogenesis-heat produced by the body during digestion, absorption, metabolism and storage of nutrients actually causes more calories to be used.
Tip the scales. A baby scale works great for keeping track of your cat’s weight, or alternatively you can take your cat in your arms, step on your own scale and then subtract your weight from the total weight shown to find your cat’s weight. Check weight loss progress every two weeks.

Just because a cat is fat does not mean it is not healthy. Ask your vet. My sister-in-law took hers to the vet and he said some cats carry weight some don’t.

They have a cat food now that is formulated for multiple cat homes. I think it is Purina cat chow. It helps over weight cats slim down and skinny ones to build lean muscles. Maybe you should check that out.

cat training guide
Cats like people all have different metabolisms and they have different activity modes. If you are concerned about the weight then actually dry food is better than canned since canned tends to have more fat and extras added to the making of it. Cats who sleep more tend to keep their weight on more than cats who like to play. You can try helping your cat by buying (or making) a few cat toys that you can get her to play with and that will help her be more active which in return can help her with the weight. If you are still concerned then I would suggest taking her to the vet and they may have a few more ideas about if she is truly overweight or if she needs any intervention with the weight. Hope this helps and please take care of yourself and your pets they say a person who has a pet lives a longer and happier life than those who do not. Good luck.

You can purchase food that has fewer calories for weight control. This will not harm the cat with the healthier weight, so you can use it for both.
Also, exercise is great and keeps both cats active.
-A wand that has feathers at the end that you twirl around- Da Bird is an example of one type. They can jump and run which is beneficial for all cats.
- A Laser Light is another toy that gets them moving as they jump and leap for the light.
Exercise in this way has the added benefit that it allows the pet-owner bond to develop, too.
Your pets will love the activity and they will love you for the attention..
Everyone is a winner.

how to train a cat
You did not say if they are indoors or out. Are they fixed? Worms can bloat the stomach, which can make them appear overweight. Your vet would know. Over-eating may be a sign of boredom, whereas undereating is usually a sign of illness. If they are indoor cats, they need something to climb on, jump, play, etc. to not be bored. As for the dry food, you are doing great. Wet food is harmful. They get moisture balance by drinking water. No milk! As with humans, you can help maintain their weight with more protein: fresh cooked fish, chicken. I personally, would not feed them red meat. Cats (and dogs) can get cancer, also, just like humans. Vegies are good, but may take some time for them to get used to. Try a little gravy or bullion broth to acclimate them. Good luck!!

I assume you have already taken them to the vet and have been advised the big guy needs to lose weight. If so, feed them different foods from separate bowls. Place diet food on the floor for them both to eat as they wish, but feed the normal weight cat his regular where the big guy can’t get to it or remove his bowl as soon as he finishes.

I have two sister cats of different weight also. They have always been that way (5 yrs) and I think it’s like 2 human sisters, some people are born with genes to be overweight. They’ll be fine.

Make sure your not feeding an adult cat food which is intended for kittens. Cat foods have different ratings on them. Food for the less active cat, hair ball formula, etc
