Don’t give into his meowing at night for more food. Find out what the recommended feeding amount is on the side of your cat food bag and stick to it. If it helps you sleep get some ear plugs and shut your bedroom door. Otherwise don’t feed him during the day and then put out his food at night to keep him busy while you sleep. The only way he will loose weight is if he eats less.

Cut back his food a little at a time – don’t starve the poor animal. You’d be PO’d if someone kept you from eating!

I’ve seen at stores that they make Diet cat food, which is supposed to help cats lose weight. That might help.

how to train a cat
You could try feeding him less food(dry) or I think stores also sell dieting food for cats. The moist canned food is probably not good for losing weight either.

Yes, I’ve seemed to notice that all orange cars seem to be fat! Feed em’ brocli or something, he has to learn he doesn’t need that much food till’ he loses weight!

Did you mean lungs? Don’t stop feeding him just cut down on the amount you feed him per meal, and he should slim down.

Take him to your vet and ask your vet what kind of low fat and healthy diet cat food they have for him. Working with an animal is just like working with a kids. If he contiunes to cry because he has no food then put him somewhere where it is harder to hear you he will eventually stop when you dont come running to him. But taking him to you vet would be you best bet

Try science diet m/d prescription diet. It’s pricey, but it’s a good formula for cats to lose weight. It’s kinda like an atkin’s diet for cats, because it’s high in protein and low in carbs (cats are carnivores–they don’t need a bunch of carbs). Don’t feed him that much, and definitely don’t let him have free reign. He might meow for a few days, but he’ll eventually learn that you’re not going to get up and feed him. If I were you, I wouldn’t try other “light” foods. They pump them full of carbs and fiber, which screws some cats up badly. I dropped $1300 on a surgery for my cat after his digestive tract was screwed up from high fiber food.

I read that putting ice in the drinking water helps burn more calories. Also some cat nip might make him more playful

I would try the following:
Put the food out only once a day, just before you go to bed.
Put out the recommended amount for one day.
Even if you see the bowl empty, do not fill it again until the same approximate time the next night.
If you do this religiously, the cat will begin to regulate his eating pattern, i.e. won’t gobble it all up at once.
Just like with children, the trick is to remain consistent! Do the same thing every day!
Now, you can add occasional treats, but until his appetite is under contraol, don’t feed him treats when he asks for them. Give him treats when he does not expect it. That way he learns that food arrives when *you* decide, not him.
Finally, Purina manufactures several brands of cat food. One comes in a lime green bag and is for indoor cats. It has fewer calories. The other is in a blue bag and is for multiple cat homes, specifically if one cat is overweight. I like these to keep my heavier cat’s weight down!
Also, remeber to paly with your cat. Chase the string, catch the bouncing toy, whatever gets him working hard and jumping around! Do this for five minutes (or more) twice a day. Wear his butt out! He’ll love it!

First of all go to a pet store and get low fat diet dried cat food for overweight cats. Then buy Friskies wet cat food in the can and give your cat 1/2 can around midnight and he will stay good all night. That is what I had to do with my female Abysinnian 4 year old. She is a little overweight so we give her diet dried cat food during the day, and 1/2 can of Friskies wet cat food around midnight. She sleeps good all night and wakes us up around 6:30 AM and we give another 1/2 can and she sleeps and rests again till I get up. That is the only way. Otherwise she bothered me, walking all over me, pushing me, jumping on my stomach, licking my face, and I could not get a wink of sleep until we came upon this idea and lo and behold it worked. Try it and see what happens.

I think there is a special type of food for overweight cats. That way your cat can eat the desired amount and still be pretty healthy
