Your cat may be having a bowel or anal gland problem and you need to get him to the vet. Even the fattest cats will clean themselves unless there is a problem, and obviously there is one here.

He probably can’t reach it, so yes…kinda gross. Put him on a diet (get Purina Indoor Cat Formula…cat loved it and lost weight!) . In the meantime, help him out with a warm paper towel.

Sounds like my WilyBeth. When her spine began to hurt her too much from her years of weight, she stopped too. I had to buy some of those non-alcohol baby wipes and yes – I had to wipe my cats butt. She had a hip issue (I forget the exact medical term) which made it tough for her to walk – due to her weight as well as genetics … plus she was overweight and the last few years of her life she was not cleaning herself well at all.
I still have to do this with my 5-month old kitten, Miracle, when she is too busy playing to stop and clean herself or gets things stuck into her long hair. I use a generic brand from a local chain of grocery stores here in Ohio that have no alcohol in them and contain aloe. They work great!

Bring it to get a professional grooming and bath.
Should also bring it to the vet for a consultation on a better diet plan.
We have also often used moist baby wipes to clean our dogs’ posterior region.

If he’s too fat, he probably can’t reach to clean himself properly.
You can help him by getting some dry cat bath wipes from the pet or grocery store & cleaning the area for him.
It’s a good idea to get him to the vet, to make sure he doesn’t have another health problem causing him to not care for himself properly.
You can help him to lose the fat & slim back down by feeding him high-quality canned food. If you normally free-feed dry cat food, try giving him a meal of canned food every evening, and then leaving out his dry food for him to snack on during the day. Just adding the quality canned food will still make a difference – it will help fill him up and make him less prone to keep overeating the dry food (which is too high in carbohydrates and poorly digested by cats, contributing to obesity). It worked great for my formerly fat cat! Please see the links below for more info.
Once he’s slimmed back down, he’ll be much more happy and energetic (and clean!).
Set aside time every day for exercise, too – play with him with a laser pointer or feather toy before suppertime, and whenever you have a free moment.
Good luck!
