Definitely. If you want your cat to live to a ripe old age, you’ll get it some exercise and watch it’s food intake or provide reduced calorie food. Obesity isn’t any healthier for our animals than it is for us.
Cats should not be overweight at all, not even chubby. It is extremely unhealthy and can cause serious health problems, especially if they are older. Fat cats are also generally uncomfortable and can develop breathing difficulties. Cut down on the food intake if you possibly can…you can get “diet” dry cat food with low calories from your vet. Try to avoid feeding her human food. Try and get her to excercise more – even walking around more if she isn’t in the mood for playing.
A cat who weighs 31 pounds is the feline equivalent of a human who weighs 400 pounds. A healthy weight is no lower than 8 pounds or kitty will starve, and no higher than 12 pounds to save putting the strain of extra weight on kitty’s joints and heart. Overweight cats live shorter lives and have health problems like diabetes and asthma, just as in humans. A healthy cat should be sleek and muscular, not fat and dependent on medication.
