Diet is important, and a diet food from the vet is the best way to start. There’s two other things I can suggest, and I hope they’re helpful:
1. no table treats. Keep your cat away from human food!
2. See if you can get her to play with you for more exercise.
Understand that weight loss takes time. She didn’t get heavy overnight, and it’ll take her some time to lose it again.

Workout plan…Hmm…
First, you might need to get your cat accustomed to leashes, so you can take her on walks. Just a 20 minute or so little walk through the neighborhood every day tones your cat and gets her blood pumping. But, you need that leash.
Of course, ask your vet about any diet food, if the kind your vet already gave you isn’t working, but you might want to see if the brand that your kitty already eats has a type of diet food. Like say your cat eats Kitten Kaboodle see if Kitten Kaboodle makes diet cat food, because most cats don’t like changes in food.
You’re playing with her, that’s good. Get some sort of toy or string or something that will make her jump around and run around, I find that trailing a shoelace or a fake mouse tied to a string around the house and over furniture gets my cat all excited and pumped and moving and jumpy.
Just remember, you don’t want to pressure your cat too much. A cat needs her beauty sleep, and lots of it. If you do your “exercise” every day, that is good enough, don’t expect your little Pearl to lose 5 pounds a week like some humans do. It also probably wouldn’t be healthy for her to lose too much because her body has become dependant on that extra weight. I guess as long as your cat is exercising and can actually move around and looks better than just a lump of flab, it’s okay. Good luck!

MM,
Have you had your kitty checked for diabetes? If not please, please do so right away! My best friends cat saved my 24lb cats life, unfortunately by dieing
.
Check your cat’s food, if it contains corn CHANGE! Vet recommended or not. Cats need protein not sugar and carbs.
Good for you to care enough to ask questions. The leash idea is a good one.
