Take your cat to another vet get a 2nd opinion. Has it had all it’s shots?

I would take you cat to another vet. No good vet would ever say that a 3 year old cat is getting old. Three years of age for a cat is still young. It sound like your cat could have a respiratory infection. It can become very serious with out proper treatment.
